Omani residents. Most of the pieces exhibited are available for sale at
the hotel.
Textiles, clothes, jewellery and carpets have traditionally been the principal canvases for visual art amongst nomadic peoples in the Gulf. These patterns and designs are still apparent in contemporary Arabia in its architecture and crafts. Mairi Thomas uses a camera to capture
the controlled aesthetics of Islamic design and its expression in the
geometric patterns found all over Oman, from city paving to the tiles
in the Grand Mosque. She is also fascinated by the contrast between the
outwardly monochromatic dress and landscape, and the glimpsed riot of
colour and pattern beneath the surface. Valéria
Thomson Valeria Thomson’s works focus on the abstract. She gains immense delight in using bold colours. She believes that a painting can be decorative and also have a power to communicate. Her work is lively, and the images invoke a sense of harmony. |
